Osteopath Treatment Tendonitis

Tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon, typically caused by rheumatoid arthritis, gout or psoriasis. Osteopaths treat this condition through a variety of techniques including mobilisation and manipulation, stretching exercises and lifestyle advice.

Tendonitis sufferers are usually recommended to rest the affected area as much as possible, avoid strenuous activities and take over-the-counter painkillers to deal with the symptoms. Osteopaths do not recommend resting the area, instead they recommend mobilisation and manipulation to treat tendonitis.

When an osteopath treats tendonitis they may use gentle mobilisations of the joints in the affected area, including articular (joint) mobilisations involving movement of the bones and muscles around the joint, and soft tissue techniques which use pressure and movement to stretch and loosen the tissues around the tendon. Osteopaths may also recommend specific exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles and tendons surrounding the affected area.

Lifestyle advice that osteopaths may give to those with tendonitis includes suggestions on how to handle stress and changes to diet.

Osteopaths treat tendonitis in different ways depending on the severity of the condition. For mild cases osteopaths will often use mobilisation of joints associated with the affected area, over-the-counter painkillers and exercise advice tailored toward strengthening muscles. However for more severe cases of tendonitis osteopaths may also prescribe anti-inflammatory medication and refer the patient to a medical professional.

Treatment for tendonitis is usually short, lasting anywhere from a week to a month. In cases where there is severe damage around the tendon osteopaths will only treat the affected area directly, without exercising or prescribing exercises. It is also possible that tendonitis will recur and the patient may need to be treated again in the future.
